•Explore the Real "Wild West"•
From 1856 until 1860, Congress considered proposals to split the New Mexico Territory horizontally to form the Arizona Territory in the South. This proposal was never enacted. In 1861, frustrated citizens of southern New Mexico, voted to secede from the Union and join the Confederate States of America. In early 1862, the Confederate Arizona Territory was officially formed. Six months later it was captured by Union forces. In February of 1863, the U.S. Congress formed its own Arizona Territory with a north-south border instead of the east-west division of the Confederate territory.
Also in 1861, Congress formed two new territories in the southwestern region. The Territory of Nevada was carved out of the western portion of Utah. The Colorado Territory was created with a portion of eastern Utah and western Kansas. On this map Nevada extends west to the ridge line of the Sierra Nevada farther south than it did. Nevada is shown to include Mono Lake and the eastern portion of Tuolumne & Fresno Counties. At the time this map was made large portions of the western interior will still unexplored and are, therefore, shown as featureless. Marked on the map are the major trails across the truly "Wild West" along with the routes of the major western expeditions.Counties, towns, forts, mines, and geographic features are noted. The lands of various Indian tribes are also shown.
The original hand-painted map, from which this replica was made, was created by Alvin Johnson in New York. Johnson maps were quite accurate and beautiful with muted, hand-painted washes delineating boundaries. This map features the "turned leaf" border that Johnson used on his maps until the mid-1860s.
